Why Compress Images?
Indian government exam portals (SSC, UPSC, IBPS, NTA, RRB) impose strict file size limits — typically 20–200 KB — for photo and document uploads. A raw smartphone photo is usually 2–5 MB, far above these limits.
Compressing reduces the file size by encoding pixels more efficiently. At 70–85% JPEG quality, the reduction in visual quality is imperceptible on screen, but the file size drops by 60–80%.
Compression vs. resizing — what's the difference?
Compression keeps the same pixel dimensions but reduces file size by lowering quality encoding.
Resizing changes the pixel dimensions (width × height), which also reduces file size.
For exam uploads with a KB limit but no dimension requirement, use compression. For portals with both limits, resize first, then compress.
Upload your image using the tool above, adjust the quality slider, and click Download. The compressed image is saved to your device instantly. No sign-up required.
Does compressing an image reduce quality?
At 70–90% quality, compression is nearly invisible. Below 50%, visible JPEG artifacts appear. For exam form uploads, 75–85% gives a good balance of sharpness and small file size.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. All compression runs in your browser using HTML5 Canvas. Your image never leaves your device — it is 100% private.
What image formats are supported?
You can upload JPG, JPEG, PNG, WEBP and HEIC images. The compressed output is JPEG for maximum compatibility.
How much can I reduce an image's file size?
Typically 50–80% reduction is achievable with minimal visible loss. A 3 MB smartphone photo can often compress to under 300 KB at 80% quality.
What quality setting should I use for exam portals?
75–80% quality is a safe default for Indian exam portal uploads. It keeps the photo sharp enough for identification while easily fitting under 50–100 KB limits.
