How to Calculate Percentage — Formula & Examples

Percentage is one of the most commonly used mathematical concepts in daily life, from calculating exam marks to shopping discounts to salary hikes. The word "percent" literally means "per hundred," so any percentage is a fraction of 100.

Formula 1 — Marks Percentage: (Marks Obtained ÷ Total Marks) × 100 = Percentage. If you scored 432 out of 600, your percentage is 432/600 × 100 = 72%.

Formula 2 — Percentage Increase: When your score goes from 60 to 75, the increase = (75−60)/60 × 100 = 25% increase.

Formula 3 — Percentage Decrease: Price drops from ₹500 to ₹400 → (500−400)/500 × 100 = 20% decrease (discount).

For Indian Board Exams: CBSE marks are given subject-wise. Your aggregate percentage = Total marks in all subjects ÷ Total maximum marks × 100. Most colleges for admission use Best-of-5 or Best-of-4 subject formula, so check your college's specific eligibility rule.
