Negative marking, normalisation and percentiles
Negative marking deducts part of a question's marks for each wrong answer — 1 of 4 in NEET and JEE Main, 0.5 of 2 in SSC CGL Tier 1, 0.25 of 1 in bank prelims and one-third in UPSC and RRB exams. Unattempted questions score zero, so a blind guess usually costs more than it gains.
Normalisation adjusts raw marks when an exam runs in several shifts with different difficulty (SSC, RRB and NTA exams do this). Percentiles (JEE Main, CAT) show the share of candidates you scored above. Use these calculators for your raw score from the official answer key, then compare with previous cut-offs.
